About

Courtmacsherry lies within the Parish of Barryroe and it's name comes from the early settlers of the village who were named "MacSeafraidh" which means "Mac Sherry's Court" and which was later anglicised to "Courtmacsherry".

Another, if more romantic explanation of the name "Courtmacsherry" bears retelling here: It was said that a certain visitor to the area fell in love with the daughter of one Mac Sherry, and each evening after partaking of supper he announced "I am now going to court Mac Sherry's daughter" - this he repeated so often that others began to imitate him - I am going to court Mac Sherry .....
